Childcare Enrollment Checklist: What to Confirm Before the First Day

Finding a childcare spot is a milestone. Before the first day, the practical work is to make sure the terms, routine, responsibilities, and backup plan can actually hold up when work starts.

1. Put the written terms in one place

Use the provider’s current contract, parent handbook, fee schedule, and enrollment instructions as the source of truth. ChildCare.gov recommends reviewing the provider’s policies for costs and fees, hours, closures, termination, and pickup arrangements before you begin care.

Keep a copy of the current policy with the effective date, then write down only the details that apply to your family: start date, recurring charges, payment method and due date, authorized pickups, closure dates, notice requirements, and the person to contact for each question.

2. Test the ordinary handoff

A workable morning is usually more valuable than a perfect-looking checklist. Confirm arrival timing, drop-off location, what must be labeled, what is supplied, how updates are shared, and the latest realistic pickup time. If a partner, family member, or backup adult may collect your child, confirm that authorization directly with the provider rather than assuming a message is enough.

3. Build a backup plan before you need it

Closures, illness, weather, delayed pickups, and sudden work conflicts should have separate notes. List at least one immediate contact, one work response, and one question you still need to ask. ChildCare.gov’s guidance for families who cannot find care also points to local resource and referral agencies as a practical starting place for local options.

4. Use the first two weeks as information gathering

Do not treat the first week as proof that a plan is finished. Track what was unexpectedly difficult: timing, communication, feeding or supply routines, fees, backup coverage, or work availability. Then choose one adjustment at a time and record the new agreement.

The free Childcare Search Starter helps while you are comparing options. The Childcare Enrollment & First 30 Days Kit is for the period after a spot is confirmed: it gives you editable pages for terms, handoffs, backup coverage, and a two-week review. It is a general educational planning tool, not provider-safety, legal, medical, licensing, tax, or employment advice.
